Advancement of Dementia Care Centre event at ºÚÁÏÍø Shores – November 25
In November 2022, ºÚÁÏÍø’s Faculty of Health Sciences and the ºÚÁÏÍø Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences launched the (ADCC), a vital new community-based partnership to uncover solutions to improve the quality of life of people living with dementia, and their caregivers, through innovation in research and deployment of new technologies.
On Monday, November 25, from noon to 4 p.m. at ºÚÁÏÍø Shores, the ADCC will host Putting the Pieces Together: Overcoming Apathy to Build an Engaged Dementia-Friendly Community, featuring key discussions and demonstrations aimed at enhancing dementia care.
Event highlights:
- Keynote speaker: Dr. Krista Lanctot will present on Dementia-related Apathy: Recent Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment.
- Technological demos: Dr. Amer Burhan and team will showcase technology-enabled dementia care innovations, such as virtual reality (VR) reminiscence therapy and VR caregiver training.
- Panel discussion: A comprehensive session featuring experts on topics including:
- Caregiver education and practice (Dr. Vivian Stamatopolous, Associate Professor, Faculty of Social Science and Humanities, ºÚÁÏÍø)
- Caregiver lived experience (Stephanie Muskat, Founder and Psychotherapist, Compassion in Caregiving)
- Technological support for caregiving (Dr. Marie Y. Savundranayagam, Associate Professor, School of Health Studies, Western University)
- Intergenerational caregiving (Dr. Raza Mirza, Assistant Professor, Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, University of Toronto)
- Caregiver policy (Dr. Mattias Hoben, Associate Professor and Helen Carswell Chair in Dementia Care in the School of Health Policy and Management, York University)
- Caregiving for dementia with intellectual and developmental disabilities (Sandy Stemp, Chief Operating Officer, Reena)
Attendees can expect a deep dive into strategies, lived experiences, and policy perspectives to promote an engaged, supportive dementia-friendly community.
