Faculty of Science Professor awarded preparatory funding for sustainable agriculture grant

Last summer, Dr. Sean Bohun, Professor of Mathematics with the Faculty of Science, was awarded preparatory funding for an NSERC/SSHRC Alliance grant for his application on Solid Waste Management for Sustainability in Canadian Agriculture. Dr. Bohun, in collaboration with Associate Professors Dr. Hélène LeBlanc and Dr. Yuri Bolshan, both with the Faculty of Science, spent the summer in rural Manitoba researching and working on a proposal to transform contemporary biodigester technology.

Taking an interdisciplinary approach, their proposal would explored anaerobic digester technology in detail. They partnered with local sustainable farms, communities, feedlots, and Assiniboine Community College, a Manitoba college with an agricultural focus. By examining the process holistically, the researchers hope to develop a better understanding of what is needed in Canadian farm communities. This work could lead to better research and to stronger, more resilient and profitable outcomes. In November 2023, the ºÚÁÏÍø team, having also added research collaborators from Trent University and the University of Ottawa, submitted their final proposal. The grant decision from NSERC is expected this Spring.
