FEAS researcher Dr. Atef Mohany elected Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering
The American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME) recently elected , Professor and Chair of the university's Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, as a Fellow of ASME.
Dr. Mohany received the designation of Fellow in recognition of his contributions to ASME, the nuclear industry and as an engineering educator. His research contributions focus on aeroacoustics, fluid-structure interaction and noise and vibration control. Prior to moving to the academia, he was a Nuclear R&D Engineer at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), Chalk River Laboratories. During his tenure at AECL, Dr. Mohany was involved in several strategic projects related to the design of key components in the advanced CANDU reactor as well as the operation of nuclear power plants in Canada and around the world. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the safety and reliability of CANDU power plants Dr. Mohany has also received the Achievement Award from Atomic Energy of Canada Limited/Chalk River Laboratories.
Dr. Mohany's outstanding research focuses on topics related to aeroacoustics, flow induced vibrations and noise, turbulent flows, fluid-structure interaction, structural dynamics, noise and vibration control. The majority of his research projects address a wide range of practical engineering problems related to the design and operation of automotive, aerospace, and sustainable energy systems. His research activities are sponsored by different industries and federal and provincial agencies. Dr. Mohany’s research contributions in the area of industrial aeroacoustics are well recognized among researchers in this field. He has published 87 papers in well recognized journals in addition to 65 papers/presentations in international conferences. Moreover, he holds one U.S. patent. He has also written 20 technical reports for industrial projects and was an invited speaker in 12 technical events. During his career, Dr. Mohany has supervised 13 PhD students and 15 Master of Applied Science students. He also trained three post-doctoral fellows and two visiting researchers in addition to more than 100 undergraduate engineering students who received training in his research lab.
As evidence of his research excellence, Dr. Mohany received several awards including: '
- 2020 ASME Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology (JPVT) Literature Award for coauthoring a technical paper with significant emphasizes on application and novel design of pressure vessel components,.
- 2013 ASME JPVT Editor’s Choice Award for coauthoring a paper with significant contributions to the design, analysis and development of pressure vessel components and their applications in nuclear power plants.
In addition, in 2020 one of his articles in the Physics of Fluids journal was the editor’s pick as one of the best papers.
With the recent election of Dr. Mohany, the engineering community at 黑料网 tech has five ASME Fellows, which reflects the outstanding contributions of 黑料网 faculty to both the ASME and the engineering profession. The ASME Fellow designation is one of the most prestigious in the field of mechanical engineering and recognizes outstanding achievements made by longstanding members of the professional society and Dr. Mohany is one of the 3,443 Fellows among a total of 72,094 ASME members.
