Open Educational Resources Day – January 20
ºÚÁÏÍø’s annual Open Educational Resources (OER) Day returns on Wednesday, January 20!
Open education is a larger, global strategy that challenges traditional notions of who creates knowledge, and who controls its dissemination in traditional, closed, and system-constrained methods of education. OER is free educational material hosted online and available to anyone.
ºÚÁÏÍø is quickly becoming a provincial leader in the adoption of OER for its students; since 2018, the university has saved its students more than $500,000 through the provision of OER textbooks and case books, programs and software, videos, games, and other educational resources. The , a student-run, staff-managed group at the university, creates and curates these resources. Faculty members can customize the resources as they wish to make learning materials specific to their courses.
On OER Day, the university invites members of its teaching and learning community to consider how open education extends beyond cost savings for students, to support learner empowerment and engagement. Participants will learn more about:
- The university’s current OER initiatives.
- Resources available to students.
- How faculty members can use the university’s OER resources to support their courses.
When: Wednesday, January 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
